“Not only did we get to meet him [Leiji Matsumoto: ed.], but he was immediately hooked on the music and accepted the project. Matsumoto lives entirely in the cosmos he created. Both mentally and practically.”

Thomas Bangalter, co-founder of Daft Punk.

At the dawn of the 21st century, Discovery established the growing reputation of Daft Punk. While the two musicians are thinking with their friend Cédric Hervet about the clips of this second opus, the memories of the cartoons of their childhood, including Albator, resurface. They then decide to try to entrust the realization of an animated film to their idol, creator of the space pirate, Leiji Matsumoto.

They go to Japan, to Toei Animation studios, to convince the producer to take up this crazy challenge. They don’t really think they will meet the master in person. However, the mangaka is well present. After a desert crossing where his recent creations did not find their public as at the time of Albator or Galaxy Express 999, Leiji Matsumoto wonders who are these young people who came to ask him for original work.

The comic book author has always had a particular attraction for France. The film Marianne de ma jeunesse
of Julien Duvivier inspired him the characteristics of his female characters and he admires the Louvre or the science fiction of Jean-Claude Mézières and Jean-Claude Forest. The idea of collaborating with French people seduces him. Especially since the first time he listened to Discovery, he was greatly inspired. “I immediately saw flashes of light blinking, their music corresponded exactly to the images of an animated space opera that had been running through my head for a while,” he explained to Les Inrockuptibles magazine in 2013. Once the animation is completed, the film Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem,
from which will be extracted the clips of the various pieces, is presented in Cannes in May 2003. Most of the reviews are complimentary. A childhood dream come true.
