King Kullen Eastport
The story of Jamie Conklin, the little boy who can not only see the dead but also talk to them, begins far from Stephen King’s native Maine, on Park Avenue in New York. The story then meanders through the streets of Manhattan before taking off. When Jamie is asked by a policewoman to find the location of a bomb planted by a terrorist, Stephen King chooses to venture to Long Island and more precisely to Eastport. Using her supernatural powers, Jamie discovers that the now dead bomber has booby-trapped the King Kullen, a supermarket well known to the locals. A real place to shop and eat, popular for being part of the very first supermarket chain in the history of the United States.
Known for inventing places, such as the towns of Derry and Castle Rock, inspired by Bangor, in which he owns a house, Stephen King has thus anchored a part of Later in real places, giving them an unprecedented celebrity, like the King Kullen in Eastport.
Later is the second novel published in the United States in 2021 by Stephen King. The first being Billy Summers.
King Kullen
Located in Eastport on Long Island, New York, King Kullen Supermarket also offers a popular food service for locals.
A Long Island-based supermarket franchise, King Kullen was founded on August 4, 1930. With 29 stores, the chain is known, according to the Smithsonian Institution, as America’s first supermarket, and as such enjoys a special status. Originally located on Jamaica Avenue in Queens, the headquarters is now located in Bethpage. The name comes from the founder of the franchise, Michael J. Cullen. The C in Cullen was replaced by a K.
