Spider-Man PS4: a stroll in Manhattan in New York
Follow in the footsteps of your favorite weaver without leaving your couch; it’s possible thanks to the Spider-Man game. While swinging from one skyscraper to another, you’ll easily be able to see the cult locations of the movies by Sam Raimi, Marc Webb not to mention Jon Watts that we also mention in our Guide to New York – 1000 cult locations in movies, series, music, comics novels. Let’s take a quick look:
In Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man, it’s in front of the New York Public Library that Uncle Ben(Cliff Robertson) is assassinated by a thief that Peter (Toby Maguire) had not dared arrest previously. The sentence uttered by his uncle before dying deeply affected him: “With great power comes great responsibility”. This event is formative in the birth of Spider-Man.
In the same film, while visiting Columbia University with his uncle, Peter meets Norman, father of his friend Harry Osborn (James Franco), by the Low Library steps. Built in 1895, this library is one of the oldest university buildings.
Third location in Sam Raimi’s film, the famous Flatiron Building, lends its façade to the Daily Bugle, the New York tabloid where Peter sells his photos, especially those of spider-Man. It’s also here that he meets J. Jonah Jameson (J.K. Simmons), the director of the newspaper vengeful towards the spider, a complainer but caring with Peter.
In Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Max Dillon (Jamie Foxx), only just transformed into Electro, wanders in times square and provokes an enormous electricity blackout. Surprised by the enemy whom he ran into earlier as a simple passerby and web spinner fan, Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield) attempts to stop him.
In The Avengers by Joss Whedon, during the battle of New York, the greatest heroes on earth gather at the foot of the Stark building, which will later become the Avengers QG.
Spider-Man was absent during the first Avengers and for a good reason: he was too young at the time according to Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Remember that the two former sagas were initiated by Sony who owned the rights to exploiting Spider-Man. This doesn’t prevent him from taking revenge and to pose in front of the building which was home to the most chilling sequence shot of the saga.
The Avengers Building
The saddest Easter Egg in history
This last point is not really a location in the film, but just a bit of something to know. The game contains the saddest Easter Egg in the development history.
An Easter Egg is when the game developers hide an element that only a real fan could detect. The very first was invented by Warren Robinett for the game Adventure released in 1979. It was to find an invisible pixel, that gave you access to a secret room, named after its developer. Spider-Man is full of references of all kinds to the web spinner’s universe but the story doesn’t end there.
A young man called Tyler wanted to make a huge surprise for his girlfriend Maddie. He had contacted the developers via Twitter in order to incorporate an Easter Egg into the game, in fact a marriage proposal to his girlfriend.
@EvanFilarca #spideysquad I need your help. This may be selfish, but I’m ready to propose to my girlfriend and want to do it in a big way. @insomniacgames @bryanintihar @BillRosemann is there anyway you can put an Easter egg of “Madison, will you marry me?” Anywhere in the game?— Tyler (@topnotch1210) 11 mai 2018
He got what he wanted; the creators had posted his request out front of a cinema. The problem however is that several weeks before the game was to come out but too late to withdraw his request, Maddie left Tyler. The magnificent marriage proposal was in vain.
